On May 8, 2012, President Obama nominated Kristine Svinicki (R) to a second five-year term on the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (“NRC”).  Svinicki’s current term is set to expire on June 30, and several Republican Members of Congress are asking for a speedy confirmation.  However, this nomination may be opposed by Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV).

On March 20, 2012, the Senate Committee on Energy & Natural Resources held a hearing to consider the nominations of four individuals: Adam Sieminski, to be the Administrator of the Energy Information Administration, Marcilynn Burke to be an Assistant Secretary of the Interior, Anthony Clark to be a member of FERC, and John Norris to be a member of FERC.

On June 16, 2011, Representative Anthony Weiner (D-NY) announced his decision to resign his seat from the U.S. House of Representatives.  This announcement comes after weeks of scandal and calls for his resignation, including from President Barack Obama.  Weiner’s resignation opens up one of 23 Democratic seats on the House

On December 8, 2010, the House Republican Conference ratified Congressman Fred Upton (R-MI) as chair of the Committee on Energy and Commerce.  The GOP Steering Committee nominated him just one day earlier, beating out Joe Barton (TX), John Shimkus (IL), and Cliff Stearns (FL).
