On November 12, 2013, President Barack Obama announced the nomination of Timothy Massad to become chairman of the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (“CFTC”), replacing former chairman Gary Gensler.  The CFTC regulates commodity and financial futures and options, and Massad’s appointment requires Senate confirmation.

On June 28, 2013, President Barack Obama announced the nomination of Colorado’s Ron Binz to become a FERC Commissioner, taking the seat of outgoing Chairman Jon Wellinghoff who announced his resignation last May (see May 31, 2013 edition of the WER).  The White House also announced that upon his appointment, the President will designate Binz to serve as the Commission’s Chairman.  Binz’s appointment to the Commission will require Senate confirmation.

On May 16, 2013, the U.S. Senate confirmed Dr. Ernest Moniz as the next Secretary for the Department of Energy (“DOE”).  With a unanimous vote of 97-0, Dr. Moniz succeeds Secretary Steven Chu.  Dr. Moniz was previously the Under Secretary for DOE from 1997 until 2001, and served as a professor of Physics and Engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology prior to his nomination (see March 11, 2013 edition of the WER).

On April 10, 2013, the U.S. Senate confirmed the nomination of Sarah “Sally” Jewell to be Secretary of the Interior.  On February 7, 2013, President Obama nominated Ms. Jewell to replace outgoing Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar.  Ms. Jewell had a confirmation hearing before the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee on March 7, 2013.
